Common symptoms
Cravings
The urge for a pouch, strongest at your usual triggers: coffee, driving, after meals, stress. A single craving usually peaks and fades within a few minutes. Craving SOS walks you through one in 90 seconds.
Irritability and anxiety
A shorter fuse, feeling on edge, or restless energy are among the most common symptoms in the first week. Exercise and sleep help more than willpower.
Brain fog and trouble focusing
Many people find it harder to concentrate for the first week or two. Do demanding work early in the day, take breaks, and expect it to lift.
Poor sleep
Falling asleep or staying asleep can be harder at first. Keep a regular bedtime and cut caffeine in the afternoon.
Bigger appetite
Appetite often goes up after quitting nicotine, and some people gain a few pounds. Regular meals and something crunchy for the hand-to-mouth habit help.
Headaches and low mood
Some people get headaches or feel low in the first days. Both usually pass as your body adjusts.
Does tapering make withdrawal easier?
The idea of a taper is to make the drop on quit day smaller: by then you're down to a few low-strength pouches a day, spaced hours apart. The taper weeks bring a milder version of withdrawal on their own. Research on cigarettes hasn't shown that cutting down first leads to more people quitting than stopping abruptly, so the best method is the one you'll follow through to a fixed quit date. Compare the two.
When to get help
Nicotine withdrawal is uncomfortable but not dangerous for most healthy adults. Talk to a doctor if your mood drops sharply or stays low, if you have a heart condition or are pregnant, or if you take medication for mental health. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 in the US to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Questions
How long does Zyn withdrawal last?
For most people, two to four weeks, with the hardest part in the first three days. Occasional cravings tied to habits can last longer but get weaker.
Is withdrawal from pouches worse than from cigarettes?
It depends on how much nicotine you take in, not the product. Someone using strong pouches all day can have withdrawal as strong as a heavy smoker's.
Can nicotine withdrawal kill you?
No. Nicotine withdrawal isn't life-threatening for healthy adults. It can feel intense, so plan for it, and talk to a doctor if you have a heart condition or your mood drops badly.
Why am I so tired after quitting Zyn?
Nicotine is a stimulant, and poor sleep is common in the first weeks, so many people feel tired for a while. It usually improves within a few weeks.
